Report of ESEP 2018

Overview

This year marks the third year of ESEP (an acronym for “Engineering Summer Education Program”), which was launched in 2016. 20 students were chosen for the program from among more than 100 applications we received from our partner universities this year. The programs were four to six weeks in duration; the first group began on June 25, and the second group began on July 2.

A new program called ESEP-UC also launched this year (intended for students from the University of California). We welcomed 12 ESEP-UC participants along with the 20 ESEP participants.

Each participant was assigned to a laboratory based on his or her research field and interests. Supported by the instructors and local students in the laboratories, the participants did lab work and research.

During the program, participants also took a bus tour of Nikko, had a wadaiko (Japanese drum) workshop, joined a Japanese class, and enjoyed a summer party. In Nikko, participants saw a Ninja show at Edo wonderland. They also visited Toshogu Shrine (designated as a world heritage site) and Kegon Falls (famous for the incredible views). In the wadaiko workshop, the participants had a fun time playing traditional Japanese drums and learning Japanese dancing.

The program completed with submission of a report following a presentation at each participating lab. The participants built skills through their research activities. Their enthusiasm and dedication were highly motivating for the Japanese students in the laboratories.

At the end of the program, several participants decided to come to the University of Tokyo for further study. It was a great opportunity for the participants to meet students from different countries. They visited tourist locations with other participants on weekends, deepened their bands, and made lifelong friends.
